2022.04.06 – NATIONAL COLLOQUIUM

2022.01.18-20 – SCIENTIFIC MISSION

Between January 18 and 20, 2022, took place another HERCULES mission to the National Library of Portugal, with the aim of analyzing and observing six codices from the Monastery of Alcobaça. The following elements of our team took part in this mission: Catarina Miguel and Silvia Scardina (Chemistry), Catarina Barreira (Liturgy), Luís Rêpas (History) and Catarina Gonçalves (Binding).

2022.01.10 – VOCATIONAL COURSE

2021.10.06 – INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM

2021.10.02 – INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ONLINE

On October 16th, Catarina Fernandes Barreira  will present a paper at the 4th International Seminar – Creation, Circulation and Functions of Images betwwen West and East in the Middle Ages. 2021.08.07 –  INTERNACIONAL SYMPOSIUM

Ana Catarina Pinheiro, M. Faustino, A. T. Caldeira, Ana Zélia Miller, Catarina Gonçalves e Conceição Casanova will present the poster  Purple Stains on Parchment: Manufacturing and Biodeterioration. 2021.05.02 – LECTURE
Catarina Fernandes Barreira will present May 19th a lecture intitled Uma preciosa e antiga livraria – o scriptorium e a biblioteca de Alcobaça em tempos medievais, within the activities of the Thematic Line «Medieval and Early Modern Philosophy» of the Gabinete de Filosofia Medieval, at the University of Porto, 4,30 p.m., Tower 1, 1st floor.

2021.01.10 – ANNUAL PROJECT MEETING

The Annual meeting of the research Project Cistercian Horizons will be held January 22nd, in a zoom session next to you! 

In this meeting will be presented the scientific and societal activities for the year.

2020.10.25 – PUBLIC EXAMINATION 

On November 6th, Shatila Jihadyah Fitri will defend her M. A. Dissertation in Archeology and Environment (Erasmus Mundus – ARCHMAT) entitled The Study of Biographical Trajectory of Portuguese 12th Century Illuminated Manuscript: LECCIONARIUM ALC. 433 from Alcobaça Collection held by The Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.

On September 23th, Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Paulo Catarino Lopes and Mário Farelo  will present papers at the International Seminar webinar Architectures of the Souls. 3rd International Seminar. Lisbon September 23th-25th, 2020. 

2020.07.15 – PUBLIC EXAMINATION 

On July 30th, Ana Tourais will defend her M. A. Dissertation in Conservation and Restauring entitled Development of a material characterization method for the medieval codices of the collection from the Monastery of Alcobaça.

On July 7th, Samuel Arrojado will defend her M. A. 2019.11.02 – INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

On November 6-9th, Ana Catarina Pinheiro, Ana Sofia Tourais, Conceição Casanova, Samuel Arrojado, Luís Miguel Rêpas e Mário Farelo will present papers at the International Conference Medieval Europe in Motion V – Materialities and Devotion (5th-15th centuries). 2019.10.20 – ANNUAL PROJECT MEETING

The Annual meeting of the research Project Cistercian Horizons will be held October 25th, at the National Library of Portugal. 

In this meeting will be presented the scientific and societal activities of the first year of work. 

Finally, it will be outlined the plan of scientific and dissemination activities to be held during the next twelfh months. 

2019.09.04 – CONFERENCE CYCLE

 On September 28th, the Monastery of Alcobaça will host the third session of the Conference Cycle Manuscripts of Alcobaça III – Music and Liturgy, coordinated by Catarina Fernandes Barreira in a partnership between the DGPC, the Institute of Medieval Studies and our Project. In this second session, lectures will be presented by Catarina Fernandes Barreira e Zuelma Chaves, project members.

 

2019.07.2 – NATIONAL CONFERENCE

On July 17th, Catarina Fernandes Barreira and Conceição Casanova will present the papers “Huum relliquayro de marfym bordado de prata, em que jazem relliquias… A liturgia de São Brás no Mosteiro de Alcobaça” and “A encadernação do scriptorium de Alcobaça: passado, presente, futuro”, respectively, at the Congress Portugal, os clássicos e a cultura europeia: colóquio de homenagem a A.A. 2019.06.15 – INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

On July 8th, Catarina Fernandes Barreira and Luís Miguel Rêpas will present the paper “Mobility among Cistercians: Portuguese Abbots in the Order’s General Chapters” at the International Congress of the Society for Medieval Mediterranean entitled Movement and Mobility in the Medieval Mediterranean (6th – 15th Centuries), Barcelona, 8-10 July 2019.

 

2019.06.02 – INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

The «Cistercian Horizons» Project will be represented at the International Medieval Congress Leeds, 1-4 july 2019. In association with the Institute for Medieval Studies, it will sponsor the panel “Cistercians, II: Aspects of Materiality a the Cistercian Context” in which papers will be presented by Luís Miguel Rêpas, Mário Farelo and Catarina Fernandes Barreira, members of the project.

 

2019.05.24 – CONFERENCE CYCLE

 On 1 June, the Monastery of Alcobaça will host the second session of the Conference Cycle Manuscripts of Alcobaça III – Music and Liturgy, coordinated by Catarina Fernandes Barreira in a partnership between the DGPC, the Institute of Medieval Studies and our Project. In this second session, lectures will be presented by João Luís Inglês Fontes, Manuel Pedro Ferreira, Luis Miguel Rêpas, Mário Farelo and Herbert González Zymla.

 

2019.05.23 – CONFERENCE CYCLE

On May 25th, the Monastery of Alcobaça will host the first session of the Conference Cycle  Manuscripts of Alcobaça III – Music and Liturgy, coordinated by Catarina Fernandes Barreira in a partnership between the DGPC| Monastery of Alcobaça, the Institute of Medieval Studies and our Project. In this first session, prof. Dr. Aires A. Nascimento will deliver a lecture on “Translations in Alcobaça and its attribution”.

 

2019.05.03 – WORKSHOP
A Workshop on Illuminated Manuscripts “Quando os monges faziam livros. Um dia no «scriptorium» de Alcobaça”, will be held on May 7th,  for the 10th and 12th years students of the Agrupamento de Escolas de Santo António, Barreiro, in a joint partenarship of the Instituto de Estudos Medievais and the Education Ministery/ Program Cientificamente provável, with the collaboration of our Project.  In this activity will participate the researchers Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Conceição Casanova, Catarina Miguel, Maria João Branco, Paulo Lopes, Mário Farelo, Diana Martins e Diogo Gomes. 

 

2019.05.02 – INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
It will be held in Brugge’s Historical Center, on  April 7th-10th, the International Conference «TechnArt 2019», organized by the University of Antwerp and the Musea Brugge. Catarina Miguel, Conceição Casanova and Catarina Fernandes Barreira will present a poster entitled CISTER.HOR: dialogues between local identities and liturgical uniformity at Alcobaça scriptorium – a spectroscopic approach. 

2019.04.13 – INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
It will be held in Évora, on  April 22nd-24th, the International Conference «Um reino de mulheres: expressões literárias, culturais e artísticas nas instituições monástico-conventuais femininas», with organisation of the CEL-UÉ, IEM, CIDEHUS-UÉ, CLEPUL, CREPAL, IECCPMA, CIRP, IEAC-GO, IPPEM, KENNEDY CENTRE, UNIFESSPA. The Project will be represented by the members  Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Paula Cardoso e Luís Miguel Rêpas.

2019.04.12 – INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
The rectory of the NOVA University will host on April 14th-17th, the International Conference MATERIAIS 2019 – Materials for a Better Life (XIX Congresso da Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais e o X International Symposium on Materials), in which will be presented a paper within the scope of our Project  by  Samuel Arrojado, Conceição Casanova, Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Catarina Miguel e Teresa Lança.

2019.03.30 – WORKSHOP
A Workshop on Illuminated Manuscripts “Quando os monges faziam livros. Um dia no «scriptorium» de Alcobaça”, will be held on April 5th, starting at 10.00 am, for the 5th and 7th years students of the Escola Básica e Secundária de S. Martinho do Porto, in a joint partenarship of the Instituto de Estudos Medievais and the Education Ministery/ Program Cientificamente provável, with the collaboration of our Project.  In this activity will participate the researchers Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Conceição Casanova, Catarina Miguel, Maria João Branco, Paulo Lopes, Mário Farelo, Diana Martins e Diogo Gomes. 

 

2019.03.15 – SEMINAR
On April 2nd, Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Conceição Casanova and Mário Farelo will give a seminar entitled «Un programme de recherche sur les manuscrits liturgiques et le scriptorium du monastère cistercien d’Alcobaça au Moyen Âge. Enjeux et méthodes» in scope of the Seminar of Master 1 «Métiers de l’historien» of the Faculté de Sciences Humaines et Sociales of the Université de Saint-Étienne, in a coorganization of the CERCOR and the faculty’s Master Histoire.

2019.03.15 – SHORT-TERM RESEARCH STAY
The Centre Européen de Recherche sur les Communautés, Congrégations et Ordres Religieux (CERCOR), belonging to the Laboratoire des Études sur les Monothéimes UMR CNRS 8584,  will host, from April 1st to 3rd, a short-term research stay by three members of the Project, during which, Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Conceição Casanova and Mário Farelo will carry on a bibliographical updating and will present the Project’s program of research to the members of the Research Unit of the students of the Faculté de Sciences Humaines et Sociales of the Université de Saint-Étienne.

2019.03.01 – COLLOQUIUM
Catarina Fernandes Barreira will present a paper entitled Cistercian Liturgy and daily practice in Alcobaça’s manuscripts, at the I International Colloquium Gesture and Belief: routes, transfers and intermediality, held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Porto, 20th and 21st of March of 2019.

2019.03.07 – LECTURE
Catarina Fernandes Barreira will present March 19th a lecture intitled Adições nos códices de Alcobaça – perspetivas de abordagem, within the activities of the Thematic Line «Medieval and Early Modern Philosophy» of the Gabinete de Filosofia Medieval, at the University of Porto, 5 p.m., room 307

2019.02.28 – INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
The Project will participate in the Internacional Conference Spacesof Initiations Objects, Images, and Rituals in the Middle Ages, 11th-13th March 2019, at Brno (Czech Republic), with papers on the dedication of Alcobaça’s church and the relation of its manuscritps as vehicle of initiation rituals.

2019.02.27 – WORKSHOP
A Workshop on Illuminated Manuscripts “Quando os monges faziam livros…”, will be held on February 27th, starting at 1.30 pm, for the 4th year students of the 1st cycle from the Centro escolar de Alcobaça do Agrupamento de Escolas de Cister, with the participation of Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Conceição Casanova and Catarina Miguel. The workshop will be held in the Sala das Conclusões of the Monastery of Alcobaça.

2019.02.01 – SEMINAR
It will be held on February, 8th a presentation of the Project Cistercian Horizons by Catarina Fernandes Barreira and Conceição Casanova at 17:10 p.m., at the Seminar Investigar em Idade Média (VI) – Projetos de Investigação: realidades e possibilidades, taking place at FCSH, Torre B, Auditorium. 

2019.01.01 – OPEN LECTURE

It will be held on January 7th, 2019, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m., an open lecture at the Afonso Lopes Vieira High School (Leiria), entitled “Traces of the monastic culture: books, libraries and scriptoria”, by Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Principal Researcher of the Project.

This lesson will be included within the scope of the classes of History of Arts and Culture. 

2018.12.23 – KICKOFF MEETING

The inaugural meeting of the research Project Cistercian Horizons will be held january 4th in the Monastery of Alcobaça. 

In this meeting will be presented the members of the research team were presented, as well as the outline and the dissemination materials associated with the project.

Finally,it will be outlined the plan of scientific and dissemination activities of the first year of work.
